We had always dreamed of celebrating our 10th anniversary in Italy. Although that dream didn't become a reality, we were still able to celebrate in a a memorable way with a surprise overnight trip to Chicago!
We drove to the airport just after breakfast and were in downtown Chicago just after noon. Our hotel was a great deal in a great location; just a few blocks from the Magnificent Mile and included a great view of the John Hancock tower and fascinating architecture all around.
Itching to see the city, we walked Michigan Ave. from end to end, wandered around Millennium Park (home of the giant-shiny-kidney-bean statue called Cloud Gate), and people watched along the Chicago river.
We had an incredible (and daring) dinner at Rick Bayless' place (the winner of Top Chef Master's). Taya's dinner was incredible: chicken. Ross' dinner was daring: raw tuna with mole sauce, squid, octopus, and crispy pigs foot.
After dinner we took another big walk all the way to the end of Navy Pier where we were rewarded with incredible views of the city and the lake.
The next morning we hopped aboard the fastest elevator in North America to the top of the Hancock tower. The views of the city and the lake were awesome and the coffee was amazing. To enjoy both at once was a great treat!
For lunch, we had the most famous deep-dish pizza in the city (and maybe the world?) at Gino's East and then added our names to the graffiti-covered walls.
After lunch we hopped on a water-taxi for a leisurely ride on the Chicago river before hopping on the 'L' train back to the airport. We were only gone for a little over 24 hours, but we made a ton of memories and had plenty of time to reminisce about 10 incredible years together.
Just like this anniversary trip, these 10 years have been a gift and we want to savor every moment God gives us together.
